Two separate pressures push birds toward uricotelism. First, many birds live in habitats with limited water access, or expend so much energy in flight that carrying large volumes of water (as ammonotelism would require) or even a moderate amount (as ureotelism would require) is a real cost; uric acid, being nearly insoluble, can be excreted as a near-solid paste using only about 5-10 ml of water per gram, or effectively none at all, minimising water loss and the weight of waste carried.

Second, bird embryos develop inside a sealed shell with no way to expel liquid waste to the outside world during incubation. If the embryo excreted urea, it is toxic enough at the modest concentrations reachable inside a small, water-limited egg that it would poison the embryo over the incubation period; uric acid, being non-toxic even when concentrated, can instead simply be stored as a solid deposit inside the shell without harming the developing embryo, only to be left behind when the chick hatches. …
