Mammals are ureotelic, so the chapter's own account of nitrogenous excretion predicts that mammalian urine should contain urea as its main nitrogenous waste. This can be demonstrated with a simple test based on urea's chemistry.

Step 1. Take a fresh sample of mammalian urine and add the enzyme urease to it (urease is a well-known enzyme, present for example in the jack bean, that specifically hydrolyses urea).

Step 2. Urease catalyses the breakdown of urea into ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2): H2N-CO-NH2 + H2O → 2 NH3 + CO2.

Step 3. Detect the ammonia released — it has a sharp, pungent smell that can be noticed directly, and it is a base, so a moist strip of red litmus paper held near the mixture will turn blue as the ammonia dissolves and raises the local pH. …
