Step 1. Cell organisation. Monerans are unicellular organisms with prokaryotic cell organisation — they lack a well-defined nucleus, membrane-bound organelles (mitochondria, chloroplasts, ER) and have smaller (70S) ribosomes than eukaryotes.

Step 2. Genetic material. Their DNA exists as a simple, circular, double-stranded ring without a nuclear membrane (the nucleoid); many also carry small extra-chromosomal circular DNA molecules called plasmids.

Step 3. Cell wall and habitat. The cell wall is made of peptidoglycan (murein), a sugar-amino acid polymer. Monerans are omnipresent, found in nearly every habitat, including places uninhabited by other life.

Step 4. Nutrition and reproduction. Most are heterotrophic, though a few are photoautotrophic or chemoautotrophic. Reproduction is mostly asexual (binary fission or budding), with sexual reproduction (by conjugation) occurring only rarely. …
