Step 1. Core distinction. Adsorption is the accumulation of a substance ONLY at the surface of another substance, without penetrating into its bulk -- it is a surface phenomenon, depends on temperature/pressure/surface area, and releases heat (heat of adsorption). Absorption is the uniform distribution of a substance throughout the ENTIRE bulk (as well as the surface) of another substance -- it is a bulk phenomenon, independent of temperature, pressure and surface area, and is not accompanied by heat evolution.
