Step 1. Purpose. Bredig's arc method is an electrical disintegration method used to prepare colloidal sols of metals such as gold, silver and platinum.

Step 2. Apparatus and procedure. Two electrodes made of the metal to be dispersed are immersed in the dispersion medium (typically water), which is kept cold, often by surrounding the vessel with ice. An electric arc is struck between the tips of the two electrodes.

Step 3. Mechanism -- vaporisation. The intense localised heat generated at the arc vaporises a small amount of the metal from the electrode surfaces.

Step 4. Mechanism -- condensation. This metal vapour immediately meets the surrounding cold dispersion medium and condenses back down, but because the medium is cold and the vapour condenses rapidly and in small quantities at a time, it forms very fine colloidal-sized particles rather than a bulk solid, producing a stable colloidal sol. …
