Step 1. The valency problem. Be's ground state (1s22s21s^22s^2), B's (1s22s22p11s^22s^22p^1) and C's (1s22s22p21s^22s^22p^2) have far fewer unpaired electrons than their known valencies of 2, 3 and 4 respectively — plain valence bond overlap of unhybridized orbitals cannot explain how they form that many bonds.
