Definition. The significant figures in a measured or calculated value are the number of digits known with certainty, plus one further, uncertain (estimated) digit.

Rule 1. All non-zero digits are significant (e.g. 127.34 g has five: 1,2,7,3,4).

Rule 2. Zeros between two non-zero digits are significant (e.g. 120.007 m has six).

Rule 3. Leading zeros (to the left of the first non-zero digit) are never significant — they only fix the decimal point's position (e.g. 0.025 has two significant figures, 0.005 has one).

Rule 4. Trailing zeros after a decimal point ARE significant (0.400 g has three); trailing zeros with no decimal point shown are NOT significant (plain 400 g has one, but 4.00×1024.00 \times 10^2 g has three).

Rule 5. In scientific notation, every digit of the coefficient is significant (3.25×10−53.25 \times 10^{-5} has three).

✓Final answer

Significant figures = certain digits + one uncertain digit, decided using the five rules above (non-zero digits, internal zeros, leading zeros, trailing zeros, scientific notation).
