Definition. When reactants are not supplied in the exact mole ratio of the balanced equation, the reactant present in the lesser (relatively insufficient) amount is used up first; once it is gone, the reaction stops regardless of how much of the other reactant remains, so this reactant LIMITS the amount of product that can form and is called the limiting reagent.
