Member education — the fifth principle of co-operation, education, training and information — is one of the most powerful remedies because so many of the sector's challenges trace back to members who do not understand, or take no interest in, their own society.

How educating members helps overcome several challenges:

  • It reduces political interference. Aware members understand that their society is an economic self-help body, not a political base. They elect committees on merit, resist capture by political groups, and vote thoughtfully — which is the strongest check on political interference.
  • It cures dormant membership and builds loyalty. Members who understand co-operative values and their own rights and duties attend meetings, use the society's services loyally, and take an active part — turning passive, dormant members into an active membership.
  • It strengthens democratic control. When members participate and vote wisely, 'one member, one vote' becomes real rather than a formality, and a small group can no longer capture the society.
  • It checks corruption and mismanagement. Aware, active members question the management, scrutinise accounts and demand transparency, so inefficiency and corruption cannot grow unnoticed.
  • It supports sound finances. Loyal, informed members subscribe capital, keep deposits with the society, and repay their loans on time, helping reduce overdues and strengthen the society's funds. …
