Co-operative education and training are therefore essential. The main reasons are:
(1) A co-operative is run by its own members. Members may be ordinary farmers, workers or consumers; they can control the society wisely only if they understand co-operation. Education makes meaningful participation possible.
(2) It keeps democratic control real. The rule of 'one member, one vote' assumes members will attend meetings, question the committee and vote sensibly. Informed members prevent domination by a small group.
(3) Efficient management needs trained personnel. A modern society is a complex business. Keeping accounts, following co-operative law, conducting audit and handling banking and marketing all need skill. Training produces the secretaries, managers and staff who can run societies efficiently and honestly.
(4) Competent, honest leadership. Trained and educated office-bearers understand their duties, are less likely to mismanage funds, and provide better leadership; much mismanagement in weak societies stems from untrained committees and staff.
(5) It preserves the co-operative character. Education keeps alive co-operative values and principles, so a society does not drift into a purely profit-seeking business or a body controlled by a few. …
