Statement (Marshall): "Other things remaining constant, the additional benefit which a person derives from a given increase in the stock of a thing diminishes with every increase in the stock that he already has."
Explanation: As a consumer goes on consuming successive units of a commodity, total utility increases but at a decreasing rate, and the marginal utility (MU) of each additional unit falls. When the want is fully satisfied MU becomes zero (point of satiety), and further consumption gives negative MU (disutility).
Schedule (illustration):
| Units of good consumed | Total Utility | Marginal Utility |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 | 10 |
| 2 | 18 | 8 |
| 3 | 24 | 6 |
| 4 | 28 | 4 |
| 5 | 30 | 2 |
| 6 | 30 | 0 |
| 7 | 28 | −2 |
MU falls from 10 to 0 and then turns negative, illustrating the law.
