Utility (the want-satisfying power of a good) is relative, subjective, ethically neutral, and distinct from usefulness.

Utility means the capacity of a commodity to satisfy a human want. Its important features are:

  1. Utility is Relative — The utility of a good is not fixed; it changes with time, place and circumstances. A woollen coat has high utility in winter but little in summer.
