Utility is the capacity of a good to satisfy a human want. Its features include being relative, subjective, ethically neutral, and distinct from usefulness and satisfaction.

Utility does not mean the good is useful or morally good — it only means the good can satisfy a want. Its important features are:

  1. Utility is relative. The utility of a good is not fixed; it changes with time, place and the situation of the consumer. A raincoat has high utility in the rainy season and little in summer.
  2. Utility is subjective (psychological). It exists in the mind of the consumer and differs from person to person. A cigarette gives utility to a smoker but none to a non-smoker.
  3. Utility is ethically neutral (morally colourless). A commodity has utility if it satisfies a want, regardless of whether it is good or bad for society. Even liquor or a knife used for crime has utility in economics. …
