Warehousing Services

Meaning of Warehousing

Warehousing is the business service of storing goods safely between the time they are produced (or purchased) and the time they are actually needed or sold. Because production and consumption of most goods do not happen at the same time or place, warehouses bridge that gap — much as transport bridges the gap of place, warehousing bridges the gap of time.

Functions of Warehousing

1. Storage — The most basic function: holding goods safely until they are required, protecting them from theft, spoilage, and the elements.

2. Risk-bearing — Once goods are placed in a warehouse, the warehouse-keeper generally assumes responsibility for loss or damage to the goods while in their custody, taking that risk off the owner's shoulders (often backed by insurance).

3. Financing — Many warehouses issue a warehouse receipt for goods stored with them, and this receipt can be used by the owner as security/collateral to obtain a loan from a bank, effectively unlocking finance against stock that would otherwise sit idle.

4. Processing — Some warehouses allow limited processing of goods while in storage — for example, seasoning, blending, or ageing certain goods before they are sold.

5. Grading and Branding — Warehouses may also grade goods by quality and pack or label them appropriately before dispatch, adding value before the goods reach the market.

6. Price Stabilisation — By holding surplus stock off the market at times of excess supply and releasing it when supply falls, warehousing helps prevent sharp price swings — the same price-stabilising role transport plays across regions, but here it operates across time.

Types of Warehouses

1. Private Warehouses — Owned and used by a single business to store its own goods — common with large manufacturers, wholesalers, and retail chains.

2. Public (Government) Warehouses — Owned by government bodies (such as the Central Warehousing Corporation or State Warehousing Corporations) and available for use by any business or individual on payment of rent — especially important for storing agricultural produce. …
