An entrepreneur is a person who conceives a business idea, arranges resources, takes risks and manages an enterprise for profit. His key functions are innovation, risk-bearing, decision-making, organising and managing resources, arranging finance and giving leadership.

Functions of an Entrepreneur

  1. Innovation — The entrepreneur introduces new ideas, new products, new methods of production, new markets and new technology. Innovation gives the enterprise a competitive edge and drives its growth.

  2. Risk-bearing and uncertainty-bearing — Every business faces risks such as changes in demand, prices, competition and technology. The entrepreneur bears these risks and uncertainties; the rewards (profit) are earned in return for accepting them.

  3. Decision-making — The entrepreneur takes crucial decisions — what to produce, how much, where to locate the business, how to arrange finance, whom to employ and how to price the product. Sound and timely decisions are vital for success.

  4. Determining objectives and planning — He sets the goals of the enterprise and prepares plans and policies to achieve them, giving direction to the business.

  5. Arranging finance — Finance is the lifeblood of business. The entrepreneur estimates the capital needed and arranges it from various sources such as own savings, loans, banks and financial institutions.

  6. Organising and managing — He brings together and coordinates the factors of production — land, labour, capital and enterprise — and manages the functions of planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling so that operations run smoothly.
