An entrepreneur is a person who identifies a business opportunity, gathers the resources needed, sets up an enterprise and runs it by bearing the associated risks. To do all this, he performs several important functions.
Five functions of an entrepreneur
-
Innovation — An entrepreneur is basically an innovator. He introduces new products, new methods of production, new markets, new sources of raw material, or new forms of organisation. Innovation gives the enterprise a competitive edge and drives growth.
-
Risk-bearing and uncertainty-bearing — Every business faces risks such as change in demand, competition, price fluctuation and possible loss. The entrepreneur bears these business risks and uncertainties, since profit is his reward for risk-taking.
-
Decision-making — The entrepreneur takes all the crucial decisions of the business — what to produce, how much, where, at what price, how to finance it, and whom to employ. Sound and timely decisions determine the success of the enterprise.
-
Organising and managing — He brings together and coordinates the factors of production — land, labour, capital and machinery — and manages day-to-day operations so that the enterprise runs smoothly and efficiently.
