Pollution is defined as any undesirable and harmful change brought about, directly or indirectly, in the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of air, water, soil, or other components of the environment, in a way that adversely affects the health, survival or activities of living organisms, including humans.
"Industries are pouring poison in water" is a description of industrial water pollution: many factories — chemical plants, textile mills, tanneries, paper and pulp mills, metal-processing and mining units — generate large volumes of wastewater (effluent) containing toxic substances such as heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium), strong acids or alkalis, synthetic dyes, and other hazardous organic chemicals. When such effluent is discharged into rivers, lakes or the sea without adequate treatment, these 'poisons' contaminate the water body — killing or poisoning fish and other aquatic organisms directly, disrupting the aquatic food web, and progressively accumulating (bioaccumulation/biomagnification) up the food chain.
