When one reactant is in vast excess, its concentration is effectively constant, and the true rate law collapses to an apparent first-order form.

A pseudo first order reaction is one whose true rate law depends on the concentrations of two (or more) reactants, but which behaves as (and obeys the integrated equation of) a first order reaction because one of the reactants is present in very large excess, so its concentration does not change appreciably during the reaction. Example: acid-catalysed hydrolysis of ethyl acetate carried out in dilute aqueous solution:
