Classification

Depending on their composition, interhalogen compounds are classified into four types:

Type	Example
$\mathrm{XX'}$	ClF, BrF, BrCl, ICl, IBr
$\mathrm{XX'_3}$	$\mathrm{ClF_3}$ , $\mathrm{BrF_3}$ , $\mathrm{IF_3}$
$\mathrm{XX'_5}$	$\mathrm{ClF_5}$ , $\mathrm{BrF_5}$ , $\mathrm{IF_5}$
$\mathrm{XX'_7}$	$\mathrm{IF_7}$
