Simple Oxides

A binary compound of oxygen with another element is called an oxide. Oxides can be classified into:

a. Acidic oxides    b. Basic oxides    c. Amphoteric oxides    d. Neutral oxides

a. Acidic oxides : An oxide which dissolves in water to give an acid, or reacts with a base to give a salt, is called an acidic oxide. For example SO2\mathrm{SO_2}, SO3\mathrm{SO_3}, CO2\mathrm{CO_2}, N2O5\mathrm{N_2O_5}, Cl2O7\mathrm{Cl_2O_7} etc.

SO2+H2O⟶H2SO3\mathrm{SO_2 + H_2O \longrightarrow H_2SO_3}

SO3+2NaOH⟶Na2SO4+H2O\mathrm{SO_3 + 2NaOH \longrightarrow Na_2SO_4 + H_2O}

Generally, oxides of nonmetals are acidic oxides.

b. Basic oxides : An oxide which dissolves in water to give a base, or reacts with an acid to give a salt, is called a basic oxide. For example Na2O\mathrm{Na_2O}, CaO, BaO etc.

CaO+H2O⟶Ca(OH)2\mathrm{CaO + H_2O \longrightarrow Ca(OH)_2}

BaO+2HCl⟶BaCl2+H2O\mathrm{BaO + 2HCl \longrightarrow BaCl_2 + H_2O}

c. Amphoteric oxides : The oxide which reacts with a base as well as with an acid to give a salt is called an amphoteric oxide. For example, Al2O3\mathrm{Al_2O_3}:

Al2O3(s)+6NaOH(aq)+3H2O(l)⟶2Na3[Al(OH)6](aq) (Acidic behaviour)\mathrm{Al_2O_{3(s)} + 6NaOH_{(aq)} + 3H_2O_{({\it l})} \longrightarrow 2Na_3[Al(OH)_6]_{(aq)}}\ \text{(Acidic behaviour)} …
