Buffer solutions

Buffer solution is defined as a solution which resists drastic changes in pH when a small amount of strong acid or strong base or water is added to it.

This property makes buffers practically important: many laboratory and biological processes work properly only within a narrow pH range, and a buffer holds the pH essentially steady while small amounts of acid or base enter the solution.
