Hydrogen peroxide acts as a bleaching agent because of its oxidising property. On decomposition, it releases nascent oxygen ([O], a highly reactive form of oxygen at the moment of formation):

H2O2(aq)→H2O(l)+[O]H_2O_2(aq) \rightarrow H_2O(l) + [O]
