Fission splits a heavy nucleus; fusion joins light nuclei — and fusion needs far higher temperatures to proceed.

Two points of difference between nuclear fission and nuclear fusion:

  1. Process: In nuclear fission, a heavy unstable nucleus (e.g. 92235U^{235}_{92}U) splits into two medium-mass daughter nuclei (plus a few neutrons) when it absorbs a neutron, e.g. 92235U+01n→56141Ba+3692Kr+3 01n+energy^{235}_{92}U + {}^1_0n \rightarrow {}^{141}_{56}Ba + {}^{92}_{36}Kr + 3\,{}^1_0n + \text{energy} In nuclear fusion, two light nuclei (e.g. isotopes of hydrogen) combine to form a single heavier nucleus, e.g. 12H+13H→24He+01n+energy^2_1H + {}^3_1H \rightarrow {}^4_2He + {}^1_0n + \text{energy} …
