Unity of Command is about one boss per employee; Unity of Direction is about one plan per group of related activities.

Unity of Command: This principle of Fayol states that each subordinate should receive instructions from, and be answerable to, only one superior at a time. Receiving conflicting orders from two bosses creates confusion, undermines discipline, and makes it impossible to fix responsibility clearly. For example, a sales executive should report to only one sales manager, not simultaneously to the marketing head and the regional manager on the same matter.

How it differs from Unity of Direction: Unity of Direction states that all activities which have the same objective should be directed by one manager, using one plan. For example, all activities related to launching a new product — market research, advertising, pricing, distribution — should be grouped under one plan and one head, even though several people may be working on different parts of it.
