Unity of Command (Henri Fayol) insists an employee should receive orders from, and report to, only one superior — not that every boss has one employee, and not that orders can come from several bosses at once.

Fayol listed Unity of Command among his 14 principles of management. The idea is simple but important: if a subordinate takes instructions from more than one superior at the same time, the instructions may conflict, authority gets diluted, discipline suffers, and the subordinate ends up confused about whose order to follow. The principle therefore fixes responsibility clearly — one person, one boss — which makes it easier to know who is accountable for what.
