Unity of Command says an employee should receive orders from one superior only; Unity of Direction says all activities with the same objective should be grouped under one plan and one head. One is about the source of instructions to a person; the other is about the singleness of a plan for a group of activities.

1. Meaning: Unity of Command means a subordinate should report to, and take orders from, only one boss — avoiding dual subordination. Unity of Direction means all activities that aim at the same objective (e.g. all activities related to one product or one territory) should be directed by one manager using one plan, so efforts are not scattered.

2. Focus: Unity of Command focuses on the relationship between a superior and a subordinate (one person, one boss). Unity of Direction focuses on a group of activities sharing a common objective (one objective, one head, one plan) — it is about organisational planning, not individual reporting lines.
