An antibody molecule is a Y-shaped glycoprotein composed of two heavy and two light polypeptide chains linked by disulfide bonds, with two identical antigen-binding sites formed by the variable regions.

Structure of an antibody molecule (described, since a diagram cannot be drawn here)

An antibody (immunoglobulin) is a Y-shaped protein molecule composed of four polypeptide chains:

  • Two identical Heavy (H) chains — longer polypeptide chains, forming the "stem" and the upper arms of the Y.
  • Two identical Light (L) chains — shorter polypeptide chains, each paired alongside one heavy chain along the upper arms of the Y.

The four chains are held together by inter-chain disulfide bonds (–S–S–), giving the molecule its stability and characteristic shape.

Each chain (heavy and light) is divided into two regions:

  • A constant region (C), whose amino acid sequence is largely the same across antibodies of the same class/isotype. …
