An antibody is a Y-shaped protein made of four polypeptide chains (two heavy, two light) held together by disulfide bonds, with antigen-specific binding sites at the ends of its two arms.

An antibody (immunoglobulin) molecule is composed of four polypeptide chains: two identical, longer 'heavy' chains and two identical, shorter 'light' chains, linked to one another by disulfide (–S–S–) bonds, giving the whole molecule its characteristic Y-shape. Each chain has a 'constant' region (which is similar across many antibodies of the same class) and a 'variable' region located at the tips of the two upper arms of the Y — these variable regions form the specific antigen-binding sites, which recognise and bind to a particular antigen. The stem of the Y (the constant region of the heavy chains) can interact with immune cells and complement proteins to help eliminate the bound pathogen.
