Primary amines uniquely form a foul-smelling carbylamine (isocyanide) on heating with chloroform and alcoholic KOH — this is the standard qualitative test for a 1° amine.

When a primary amine is warmed with chloroform (CHCl3CHCl_3) and alcoholic potassium hydroxide, an offensive-smelling isocyanide (carbylamine) is formed:

R–NH2+CHCl3+3KOH→ΔR–NC+3KCl+3H2OR\text{–}NH_2 + CHCl_3 + 3KOH \xrightarrow{\Delta} R\text{–}NC + 3KCl + 3H_2O
