Optical activity in α\alpha-amino acids requires the α\alpha-carbon to bear four different groups; glycine's α\alpha-carbon carries two identical H atoms, so it has no stereocentre and is optically inactive.

All standard α\alpha-amino acids have the general structure H2N−CHR−COOHH_2N-CHR-COOH, where the central (α\alpha) carbon is bonded to: an amino group (−NH2-NH_2), a carboxyl group (−COOH-COOH), a hydrogen atom, and a side chain (RR).

For the α\alpha-carbon to be a stereocentre (and hence for the amino acid to be chiral/optically active), all four groups attached to it must be different.
