Amino acids are classed as essential or non-essential based on whether the human body can synthesise them itself or must obtain them from food.

Essential amino acids are those that the human body cannot synthesise (or cannot synthesise in sufficient quantity) using its own metabolic pathways, so they must be supplied through the diet. A deficiency of these in the diet impairs protein synthesis and growth.

Example: valine (others include leucine, isoleucine, lysine, threonine, phenylalanine, methionine, tryptophan, histidine).
