Rectification is the process of converting an alternating current (which reverses direction periodically) into a direct, unidirectional current, exploiting the one-way conduction property of a p-n junction diode.

A transformer with a centre-tapped secondary feeds two diodes D1D_1 and D2D_2; their cathodes are joined together and connected to one end of the load resistor RLR_L, whose other end connects to the centre tap (taken as the reference/ground).
