Declination and inclination (dip), together with the horizontal component of the field, are the three elements that specify the Earth's magnetic field at a place.

(a) Magnetic declination (θ\theta): At a given place, the magnetic meridian (vertical plane containing the direction a compass needle points, i.e. the Earth's magnetic axis direction) generally does not coincide with the geographic meridian (vertical plane through the true geographic north-south direction). The angle between the geographic meridian and the magnetic meridian at that place is called the magnetic declination.
