The relationship between species richness and area forms a rectangular hyperbola because, on a log-log scale, the power function describing this relationship becomes a straight line, revealing a constant slope that reflects how species accumulate with area.

When you plot species richness on the vertical axis and area on the horizontal axis, the curve rises steeply at first, then gradually flattens out — a rectangular hyperbola. The relationship is described by the power function: S = cA^z, where S is species richness, A is area, C is the Y-intercept, and Z is the slope. Ecologists have found that the value of Z lies in the range of 0.1 to 0.2, regardless of the taxonomic group or region studied — plants in Britain, birds in California, or molluscs in New York state all show remarkably similar slopes.

Note

Across very large areas — entire continents — the slope is much steeper, with Z values in the range of 0.6 to 1.2. For frugivorous (fruit-eating) birds and mammals across the tropical forests of different continents, the slope is found to be 1.15. …
