Filariasis (also called elephantiasis) is a chronic lymphatic disease caused by parasitic, thread-like roundworms called filarial worms - mainly Wuchereria bancrofti (and also Wuchereria malayi/Brugia malayi). These worms live in the lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes of the human body, causing chronic inflammation and gross deformity/swelling, most typically of the legs and external genitalia (hence the common name 'elephantiasis').
