Spermatogenesis is the process by which diploid spermatogonia in the seminiferous tubules of the testis develop into haploid, mature, motile sperm through mitosis, meiosis and spermiogenesis, under hormonal control.

Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of sperm from primordial (undifferentiated) germ cells located in the seminiferous tubules of the testes; it begins at puberty under the influence of increased secretion of the hypothalamic hormone GnRH (Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone).

Stages:

  1. Multiplication phase: The primordial germ cells (spermatogonia, diploid, 2n) present on the inner wall of the seminiferous tubules divide repeatedly by mitosis to increase in number.
  2. Growth phase: Some spermatogonia (type B) periodically increase in size to become primary spermatocytes (2n).
  3. Meiotic (maturation) phase:
    • Each primary spermatocyte undergoes the first meiotic division (meiosis I, reductional) to form two equal, haploid secondary spermatocytes (n).
    • Each secondary spermatocyte then undergoes the second meiotic division (meiosis II, equational) to produce two equal, haploid spermatids (n). So one primary spermatocyte ultimately yields 4 haploid spermatids.
  4. Spermiogenesis: The non-motile, round spermatids transform into mature, motile spermatozoa (sperm) through a process called spermiogenesis, involving formation of the acrosome (from the Golgi body, containing enzymes to penetrate the egg), condensation of the nucleus, and development of the flagellum (tail) for motility.
  5. Spermiation: The final release of mature sperm from the Sertoli cells into the lumen of the seminiferous tubule. …
