Spermatogenesis converts diploid spermatogonia into haploid sperms in the seminiferous tubules through multiplication, growth, two meiotic divisions and spermiogenesis.

Spermatogenesis is the process by which haploid spermatozoa (sperms) are produced from the diploid germ cells (spermatogonia) in the seminiferous tubules of the testis. It begins at puberty under the influence of GnRH → FSH and LH; LH acts on Leydig cells to secrete testosterone, and FSH and testosterone act on the germinal epithelium.

It occurs in phases:

  1. Multiplication phase — the primordial germ cells / spermatogonia (2n) divide repeatedly by mitosis; some remain as stem cells while others enlarge.
  2. Growth phase — a spermatogonium grows to form a primary spermatocyte (2n).
  3. Maturation (meiotic) phase — each primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis-I to form two haploid secondary spermatocytes (n); each secondary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis-II to form two spermatids (n). Thus one primary spermatocyte yields four spermatids. …
