Q.A longitudinal section of a mature, inverted (anatropous) ovule is described, with several leader lines each pointing to a different part that must be named. The ovule hangs from a short stalk that attaches it to the placenta and runs back alongside the ovule's body; the ovule is wrapped in protective covering layer(s) that enclose a central nutritive tissue; embedded within that tissue is a large oval sac holding the egg apparatus and other cells; a narrow pore lies at the tip of the ovule close to where the stalk joins it, and directly opposite this pore, at the base, the covering layer(s) and stalk merge into a common region. Name the part indicated at each position:
(i) the stalk attaching the ovule to the placenta;
(ii) the protective covering layer(s);
(iii) the central nutritive tissue;
(iv) the large oval sac inside;
(v) the narrow pore at the tip; and
(vi) the basal region lying opposite that pore.

Reading from the stalk inward: the funicle attaches it to the placenta, the integuments protect it, the nucellus is the nutritive tissue enclosing the embryo sac; the micropyle is the small pore at the tip and the chalaza is the base directly opposite it.
Concept
An ovule (megasporangium) is attached to the placenta of the ovary by a stalk and is protected by one or two envelopes. Because it is anatropous, the body of the ovule is turned so that the micropyle lies close beside the stalk. Its parts, from outside in and from tip to base, are named below.
Named parts
- (i) Funicle – the stalk that attaches the ovule to the placenta of the ovary.
- (ii) Integument(s) – the one or two protective envelopes surrounding the ovule (the point where the funicle fuses with the body is the hilum).
- (iii) Nucellus – the central mass of nutritive parenchyma enclosed by the integuments. …
