CH3MgBr + CO2 (then H3O+) → acetic acid; LiAlH4 → ethanol; NH4OH + heat → acetamide.

Preparation of acetic acid from methylmagnesium bromide:

The Grignard reagent adds to carbon dioxide (dry ice) to give an addition product, which on acid hydrolysis yields the carboxylic acid with one more carbon:

CH3MgBr + O=C=O → CH3COOMgBr;

CH3COOMgBr + H2O/H+ → CH3COOH + Mg(OH)Br.

(i) Reduction with LiAlH4: lithium aluminium hydride reduces the –COOH group to a primary alcohol:

CH3COOH --(LiAlH4, then H2O)--> CH3CH2OH (ethanol).
