In an AC circuit where voltage and current are 90° out of phase, the average power consumed is zero even though a current flows — this current is called wattless or idle current.

The average power dissipated in an AC circuit is

Pavg=VrmsIrmscos⁡ϕP_{avg} = V_{rms}I_{rms}\cos\phi

where ϕ\phi is the phase difference between the voltage and the current, and cos⁡ϕ\cos\phi is called the power factor.

In a circuit containing only a pure (resistanceless) inductor or only a pure capacitor, the current leads or lags the voltage by exactly 90°90° (ϕ=90°\phi = 90°), so cos⁡ϕ=0\cos\phi = 0, and hence

Pavg=VrmsIrms×0=0P_{avg} = V_{rms}I_{rms}\times0 = 0

Even though current does flow through the circuit (energy is alternately stored in and returned from the magnetic/electric field each half-cycle), no net energy is dissipated over a full cycle — this non-power-consuming current is called the wattless current or idle current.
