The concept first. A device driver is a piece of system software that acts as translator between the operating system and one specific hardware device. The OS speaks in general commands ("print this", "draw this"); the driver converts them into the exact signals that particular printer or graphics chip understands. Every working device on your computer — display, network card, keyboard, sound chip — has a driver installed.
How to locate drivers on a Windows computer (do this with your teacher):
- Right-click the Start button → choose Device Manager. (Alternative: press Windows key + R, type
devmgmt.msc, press Enter.) - A tree of hardware categories appears: Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound controllers, Keyboards…
- Expand a category, right-click a device → Properties → Driver tab. There you can read the driver provider, driver date and driver version — proof of the installed driver.
A worked example of what you might record (clearly an example — the names on your machine will differ):
| # | Category in Device Manager | Device found | Driver's job |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Display adapters | Intel UHD Graphics | Lets Windows render the desktop and videos on the monitor |
