Practise pranayama on an empty stomach, in a clean airy place, seated with an erect spine, breathing slowly and gently — never straining — and under proper guidance.

General rules and precautions for practising Pranayama:

  • Empty stomach: practise early in the morning on an empty stomach, or at least a few hours after meals.
  • Clean, airy place: choose a quiet, well-ventilated, dust-free environment with fresh air.
  • Correct posture: sit in a comfortable meditative posture with the spine, neck and head erect, body relaxed.
  • Slow and unforced breathing: keep the breath smooth, slow and controlled; never strain, jerk or over-hold the breath, especially with retention (Kumbhaka).
  • Progress gradually: start with easy practices and short durations, increasing slowly with regular practice.
  • Proper guidance: learn under a qualified yoga teacher, particularly for advanced techniques and Kumbhaka.
  • Health conditions: those with high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory illness, hernia or who are pregnant should avoid vigorous pranayamas or practise only gentle ones under advice. …
