Q.Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. A physical education teacher sets up a 10-station circuit for Class 12 students: squats, push-ups, planks, lunges, pull-ups, crunches and four other exercises arranged in a loop, with 30 seconds of work at each station. One student, Kabir, rests for 2 minutes after every station because he wants to give his best at each exercise. Another student, Sana, rearranges her sequence so that push-ups are immediately followed by the bench press, working the same muscles at consecutive stations.

(i) What is circuit training?
(ii) Point out the error in Kabir's approach and state the recommended rest between consecutive stations.
(iii) Point out the error in Sana's sequence and state the design principle she has violated.
(iv) Suggest any two ways in which the teacher can progress this circuit over the coming weeks.

Circuit training is a series of exercise stations performed in a fixed order. Kabir's error is resting between stations at all -- the prescribed protocol is no rest between exercises, with about 1 minute of rest only after a complete cycle. Sana's error is placing two same-muscle-group exercises consecutively, which violates the muscle-alternation design principle. The circuit can be progressed by increasing repetitions/cycles or by increasing resistance/complexity.

(i) What is circuit training?

Circuit training is a method in which a series of exercises -- usually 10 to 12 "stations" -- is performed one after another in a fixed order, with or without apparatus, at a given dosage, for a set number of circuits. It develops strength and endurance together in one session.

(ii) Kabir's error and the recommended rest

Kabir rests for 2 minutes after every station because he wants to give his best at each exercise. This is a genuine error in his approach -- not simply that his rest is "too long," but that it misunderstands the protocol entirely. Each of the ten stations already prescribes only 30 seconds of work, so the circuit is designed to flow continuously from one station to the next. The syllabus's own worked circuit examples both state the same rest rule: no rest at all between exercises; a rest of only about 1 minute is taken after completing one full cycle, with 1 to 3 cycles performed in total. Kabir should be resting between stations not at all -- moving straight from one station to the next -- and taking his 1-minute rest only once he has completed the entire circuit, not after every single station.

(iii) Sana's error and the design principle violated

Sana places push-ups immediately before the bench press. Both exercises work essentially the same muscle group -- the chest, shoulders and triceps. This violates the design principle that consecutive stations must alternate muscle groups, so that one muscle group can recover a little while a different one is being worked at the next station. Working the same muscles back-to-back fatigues them rapidly, breaks down technique at the second station, and reduces the effectiveness of the whole circuit.

(iv) Two ways to progress the circuit …
