Concept understanding — the hierarchy of training cycles
Training is not scattered work; it is periodised, meaning it is divided into cycles of increasing length that nest inside one another like boxes. Each level has a different job.
| Cycle | Typical duration | Built from | Its job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro cycle | About 1 week (3–10 days) | Individual training sessions | Arrange load and recovery day by day |
| Meso cycle | 3 to 6 weeks | Several micro cycles | Develop one specific goal (e.g. build strength base) |
| Macro cycle | A whole year / season | Several meso cycles | Bring the athlete to peak form for the main competition |
The prefixes are the mnemonic: micro = small (a week), meso = middle (a month or so), macro = large (a year). If you can attach one duration to each prefix, you can answer every cycle-length MCQ.
What a micro cycle contains
The micro cycle is where the actual training sessions are laid out — how many sessions, on which days, at what intensity, and where the recovery goes. A typical week for a school-level athlete might read:
| Day | Session | Load |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Strength / general conditioning | High |
| Tuesday | Technique + light aerobic work | Low |
| Wednesday | Speed / interval work | High |
| Thursday | Active recovery, flexibility | Very low |
| Friday | Tactical / game practice | Moderate |
| Saturday | Competition or trial | High |
| Sunday | Complete rest | — |
Two ideas govern that layout:
- Alternation of load and recovery. A hard day is followed by a lighter one, because adaptation happens during recovery, not during the session. Stacking hard days without recovery produces fatigue and overtraining, not gains.
- A repeatable rhythm. Because it is about a week long, the micro cycle can simply be repeated (with progressively increased load) to build up a meso cycle.
The stated range 3 to 10 days exists because a micro cycle is a functional unit, not a calendar unit. It may be shortened during a dense competition schedule or stretched slightly in a heavy loading block. But the standard, and the value expected in the exam, is about one week.
Refuting the other options
- (b) 3 to 6 weeks. This is the duration of a meso cycle — the middle-sized block, made of roughly 3 to 6 micro cycles, devoted to one training objective. Choosing this option confuses the middle unit with the smallest.
- (c) An entire year. A whole year or competitive season is a macro cycle. It is far too long to be a planning unit for individual sessions: within one year an athlete passes through a preparatory phase, a competition phase and a transition (recovery) phase, each of which is itself made of several meso cycles. …
