Fartlek training is a form of continuous running that mixes fast bursts with slower recovery jogs, all done on natural terrain. It is called 'speed play' because the runner freely varies pace according to how they feel, not a stopwatch.

Fartlek is a Swedish term that literally means 'speed play'. It was developed in the 1930s by Swedish coach Gösta Holmér as a more natural, less rigid alternative to the structured interval training that was popular at the time. Holmér wanted a method that built both endurance and speed without the psychological pressure of timed repetitions.

The core idea is simple: you run continuously, but you change your pace whenever you want. You might sprint to a tree, jog to the next lamppost, stride hard up a hill, then recover on the downhill. There are no set distances, no prescribed rest periods, and no stopwatch. The runner decides the pattern based on how their body feels and the terrain around them.

Why 'speed play'? Because the word 'play' captures the freedom and spontaneity of the method. Unlike interval training, where you run a fixed distance (say, 400 metres) in a fixed time (say, 80 seconds) and rest for a fixed duration, fartlek lets you 'play' with your speed. One day you might do ten short bursts; another day, three long surges. The pace changes are irregular and unpredictable, which mimics the demands of many sports — especially games like football, hockey, and basketball, where you sprint, jog, walk, and sprint again in a random pattern.

Note

Fartlek is often confused with interval training. The key difference: interval training uses fixed work and rest periods, while fartlek uses variable pace changes decided by the runner. Both improve speed and endurance, but fartlek is more flexible and mentally less demanding. …
