(a) Significance of photorespiration:
Photorespiration (the C2/glycolate pathway) occurs when RuBisCO, instead of fixing CO2, binds O2 (its oxygenase activity), which happens especially under conditions of high light intensity, high temperature, and low internal CO2/high O2 (e.g. when stomata partially close during heat/water stress). This pathway spans the chloroplast, peroxisome and mitochondrion, consumes O2 and ATP, and releases CO2 — without producing any net ATP, NADPH, or sugar, making it seem 'wasteful' compared to normal photosynthesis. Its significance, however, lies in protection:
- It acts as a safety valve that dissipates excess light energy and reducing power that RuBisCO/the Calvin cycle cannot otherwise use when CO2 is scarce, preventing this excess energy from causing photo-oxidative damage to chlorophyll and the photosynthetic membranes.
- It links carbohydrate metabolism with amino acid (glycine, serine) and lipid metabolism, since intermediates of the pathway feed into other metabolic routes.
- In C3 plants, though it can reduce net photosynthetic efficiency by up to about 50% under hot, high-light, dry conditions, it is nonetheless important for survival under such stress — which is also why C4 plants (which suppress photorespiration through CO2-concentrating mechanisms) are more efficient in hot, dry climates.
(b) Short note on Carotenes:
Carotenes are a class of accessory photosynthetic pigments belonging to the carotenoid group; they are pure hydrocarbon pigments (unlike xanthophylls, which are oxygenated carotenoids), coloured yellow to orange, and fat-soluble. β-carotene is the most abundant example. Functions:
- Light-harvesting — carotenes absorb light mainly in the blue-violet region of the spectrum (wavelengths chlorophyll absorbs less efficiently) and transfer this captured energy to chlorophyll a, broadening the range of usable light for photosynthesis. …
