Extension of the condensed internode of the receptacle

In some flowers, the internode of the receptacle between two whorls elongates into a distinct, named stalk-like extension. An anthophore is this elongation between the calyx and the corolla, as in the Caryophyllaceae (Silene conoidea). An androphore is the elongation between the corolla and the androecium, as in Grewia. A gynophore is the elongation between the androecium and the gynoecium, as in Capparis. A gynandrophore (or androgynophore) is a combined, unified elongation spannin …

Figure 4.36Anthophore, Androphore, Gynophore and Androgynophore

What this figure shows. (a) Anthophore - a flower diagram with an elongated internode labelled 'Anthophore' between the labelled 'Calyx' and 'Corolla' whorls (Silene conoidea). (b) Androphore - a flower diagram with an elongated internode labelled 'Androphore' between the labelled 'Corolla' and 'Androecium' whorls (Grewia). (c) Gynophore - a flower diagram with a stalk-like elongation between the androecium and gynoecium raising the ovary above the other whorls (Capparis). (d) Androgynophore - a flower diagram with one combined elongated internode spanning from the corolla up through the …
