Heat flows spontaneously from hot to cold because the molecules of the hotter body have higher average kinetic energy, and this energy transfer to the cooler body increases the total entropy of the system, satisfying the second law of thermodynamics.

When two objects at different temperatures are brought into contact, the molecules of the hotter object have a higher average kinetic energy (temperature is a measure of average molecular kinetic energy) than the molecules of the colder object.

At the region of contact, faster-moving (hotter) molecules collide with slower-moving (colder) molecules, and in these collisions energy is transferred, on average, from the faster molecules to the slower ones (just as in any collision, energy tends to move from higher-energy to lower-energy participants). This continues until both objects reach the same average molecular kinetic energy, i.e. the same temperature — thermal equilibrium.
