The zeroth law says two bodies each in thermal equilibrium with a third body are also in thermal equilibrium with each other -- this is what allows temperature to be defined.

Statement of the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics: If two thermodynamic systems, A and B, are each separately in thermal equilibrium with a third system C, then systems A and B are also in thermal equilibrium with each other.

Two systems are said to be in 'thermal equilibrium' when there is no net flow of heat between them when they are brought into contact, i.e. they are at the same temperature.

This law is called the 'zeroth' law because it was recognised as being logically needed for a rigorous definition of temperature only after the first and second laws had already been named and numbered, yet it is more fundamental than either of them.
