Significant figures follow a fixed set of rules for counting reliable digits in a measured quantity, covering non-zero digits, zeros, and decimal points.

The rules for determining significant figures are:

  1. All non-zero digits are significant. Example: 1234 has 4 significant figures.
  2. All zeros occurring between two non-zero digits are significant. Example: 2005 has 4 significant figures.
  3. Zeros to the left of the first non-zero digit (leading zeros) are NOT significant -- they only fix the position of the decimal point. Example: 0.0025 has only 2 significant figures (2 and 5).
  4. Zeros to the right of the last non-zero digit, AFTER a decimal point, are significant. Example: 1.500 has 4 significant figures.
  5. Zeros to the right of the last non-zero digit in a number WITHOUT a decimal point are ambiguous and generally not counted as significant, unless the precision is explicitly indicated (e.g. by scientific notation). Example: 1500 is usually taken to have only 2 significant figures, but 1.500 x 10^3 clearly has 4. …
